Asia Argento, born in Rome to a family that includes directors and actors, pursued both professions. Her debut came when she was just nine in the film of Sergio Citti's Sogni e bisogni (1985). The film featured her in a lead role as Cristina Comencini in her first film Zoo, 1989. Michele Soavi directed The Church 1989. In 1989 she portrayed Nanni Moretti's child as the Red Wood Pigeon. (Also directed by Moretti). Close Friends (written and directed by Michele Placido) was when Asia's acting career truly took off. The roles she played changed from very young before becoming more mature. The film received a great reception at the Cannes International Film Festival. In Trauma (1993) it was the first time she was the first to work alongside her father, the renowned Italian horror director Dario Argento (her mother is one of Argento's favorite actresses, Daria Nicolodi, playing an anorexic girl in search of her parents' killer. The Phantom of the Opera will be her third film together with her father, her first two movies being Trauma and The Stendhal Syndrome. Asia's focused and intense style of acting has also been used by Giuseppe Piccioni in Condannato a Nozze. Also, she was a part of the role in the international cast of Queen Margot produced by Patrice Chereau. Her next collaboration was with Michel Piccoli on Peter Del Monte's Traveling Companion in 1995, earning her another David di Donatello role as in addition to an award from Grolla D'oro. Asia began directing short films around 1994. Two of them were made: Prospettive in 1996. She directed a document about her father, and Abel/Asia in 1998, about the famous film director Abel Ferrara. This latter was recognized at the Rome Film Festival. In 1999 Asia began her film-directing career with Scarlet Diva (2000), in which she was the leading actress and author of the screenplay. The film premiered in May 2000 across Italy as well as the rest of the world. This film was awarded by the Williamsburg Festival of Brooklyn, New York. After directing numerous music videos and giving birth, she welcomed her first daughter, Anna Lou. In 2002, Asia starred as Jean-Marc Bar's co-star The Red Siren (Olivier Megaton) as well as Vin Diesel was the star of Rob Cohen's action thriller The Action. Asia's short stories have also been featured in prestigious publications.
